To me I feel that if you don't want to give so much at least near to the amount so that the couple don't have to pay so much for the banquet costs. We all know it is expensive lunch/dinner but it is also a moment in your life to witness your best pal or friend their happiest moment.
If you can't make it to their wedding from the very start, do let them know. Once you confirm you can go and invitation card sent to you, you definitely must try to block out the date and try your best to be there. If really last min you are unable to go, at least give a small red packet or gift to them after the wedding. I think is the basic courtesy of being a friend. If not from the very very first start, you shouldnt have promise to go.
